CasingCooler™

Why CasingCooler™

The “Non-Thermally Cased and Cemented Wells” Problem

Thousands of legacy wells drilled into reservoirs that cannot be thermally stimulated because they are not thermally completed. Thermally stimulating a non-thermal well is almost certain to cause irreparable damage to the casing and cement, rendering the well inoperable.

The CasingCooler™ Solution

GERI’s CasingCooler™ “makes steaming possible” in non-thermally completed wells, unlocking previously inaccessible oil and offers additional protection in thermal wells, preventing potential wellbore failures.

How It Works

How the CasingCooler™ Technology Works

The CasingCooler™ is a patented, closed-loop system that protects the well casing and cement by constantly circulating coolant (inhibited water) inside the annular space between vacuum insulated tubing (VIT) and the well casing. The inhibited water is cooled on surface and re-injected into the well.

The system is designed to be inherently safe, using automatic controls/shut-down and constant, real-time temperature, pressure, and volumetric (tank levels) measurements, ensuring proper and safe operation. The system can be viewed and controlled remotely.

Additionally, the CasingCooler™ has been independently scrutinized through robust and rigorous hazard and operability analyses (HAZOP), and has been used successfully in two different Canadian regulatory jurisdictions.

Deployments to Date
The CasingCooler™ has been deployed five times across four locations in Western Canada, in both horizontal and vertical wells.

Benefits

Easy and quick installation

Fully automated controls, making it easy to operate

Reusable (can be quickly deployed to other wells)

Closed-loop circulating system, meaning no additional water requirements

Low power requirements

Very small surface footprint

Delivery time of 2-3 months for new units

Customizing to Your Needs

The CasingCooler™ system is very flexible and is deployable in a wide variety of applications. GERI has developed a heat-transfer model to determine customer well-specific CasingCooler™ design and configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CasingCooler™ is flexible in the type of cooling fluid that can be used; however, we recommend using fresh inhibited water.

Yes. Prior to installation, GERI uses a custom heat-transfer model to determine the required heat exchanger size and circulation rates/temperatures to protect the wellbore.
With the use of vacuum insulated tubing (VIT), very little heat is lost in the steam. Depending on the application, the heat loss is <3%.
Yes, the CasingCooler™ can be used to protect the casing with other types of thermal stimulations.
